2 Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Man Protecting His Grandfather

Danilo Estuardo Morales was shot to death on Jan. 9.

Police today confirmed two arrests in the slaying of a 24-year-old man who was shot when he came to his grandfather's aid during a robbery.

A third suspect is still being sought in the Jan. 9 shooting death of Danilo Estuardo Morales.

Rene Ramirez, 29, of Mission Hills, and Evin Adonis Ortiz, 22, of Valley Glen, were both booked on suspicion of murder at the Van Nuys jail and are being held without bail, said Cmdr. Andrew Smith of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Community Affairs Group.

"Detectives have been working around the clock, developing leads," he said, adding he had not yet been briefed on "specifically what led them to these guys."

According to the sheriff's Inmate Information Center website, Ramirez was arrested on Friday and Ortiz was arrested the previous day, with bail set at $1 million.

Police did not release the name of the suspect who remains at large.

Morales' 68-year-old grandfather was robbed in the driveway of a home in the 8100 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue, one block north of Strathern Street, about 6:45 p.m. on Jan. 9.

Manuel Flores had driven down the long driveway and parked his car behind a relative's home, as was his habit, when he was set upon by three robbers, said Sgt. Marc LaMont of the LAPD's North Hollywood Station.

The grandfather screamed for help as the robbers fled with his wallet and jewelry, prompting his grandson to rush outside and chase after the three as they jumped into a white, mid-sized sport utility vehicle, LaMont said.

One of the trio fired on the grandson during the getaway, killing him with a gunshot wound to the head on Willard Street, just west of Coldwater Canyon Avenue. The grandfather was uninjured.

Police recovered the suspected getaway vehicle, a 1997-1999 white Mitsubishi Montero with a broken rear window and a long rear reflector light, and were processing it for evidence, according to Smith.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call North Hollywood homicide Detectives Castro or O'Donnell at (818) 623-4075. After hours, call (877) 527-3247. Anonymous tips can be made to (800) 222-8477.

Once again we see the L.A.P.D. doing an incredible job at bringing low life killers to justice! Does not get much better than Castro & O'Donnell lets not forget the boss, Lt. Hamilton.
This is also a good example as to why law abiding citizens should be armed! Look at all the states that make carrying a concealed weapon a right. The bad guys in those states always have than in the back of their little weasel minds! ' are they armed or are they not?'
