Councilmembers Ed P. Reyes and Paul Krekorian held a special joint meeting Wednesday at Los Angeles City Hall aimed at finding solutions to the ban on public murals in the city that has been in place since 2002.

Krekorian's office said the purpose of the meeting was to craft an ordinance, consistent with the First Amendment, that permits fine art murals on private property, and thus restores Los Angeles as the "mural capital of the world."

Patch caught up with Krekorian Thursday morning at a ground breaking ceremony for new renovations at Valley Village Park, where he explained what was discussed and decided at the meeting.

The park is just a few blocks from where Barbara Black whitewashed over a mural in April that she had painted in her alley after being notified by the city she would be fined for violating the city's ban on public murals. Black's mural gained attention from media all around the city and brought new focus on the subject.

@ Alex Daniels ... I refuse to be so churlish nor crass as to refer to anyone as an "idiot" nor a "moron" but I will agree with Alex's basic point. "Making LA the cleanest city."

The Neighborhood Councils, the City Council and the Mayor must take the lead of making LA the cleanest city. Only by a concerted effort of all concerned residents and government representatives can the problem with trash and litter be alleviated.

We have lived in the same place for 42 years. We reside in a residence among multi-retail/commercial businesses. Ten (10) years ago we requested and had a city supplied wire basket (one of the old cheapo styles) placed at the corner by the bus bench . It really made a difference, even when people dumped what appeared to be personal trash from their own homes or businesses. We maintained the removal of the trash into our commercial dumpster on a weekly basis and sometimes the city even picked up the basket contents before we did.

Then, sometime last month, the city wire basket disappeared. I have yet been able to get an answer from the Streets & Sidewalks division in North Hollywood if they had removed the basket.

In addition to two other businesses helping out we still maintain the gutters and the sidewalk around this corner. It's one small area, but it's the cleanest area on the block.

When the Santa Ana winds blow or it rains the trash is swept South to Studio City and/or the LA River.

Murals become grafitti. Grafitti becomes murals. Who can tell the difference? And who is going to regulate the subject matter? What about a porno mural on private property? People, keep your artwork private!

As the producer of the mural at the SC Hand Car Wash, called the "Great Wall of Studio City", people love the work of art which is a depiction of the history of Studio City. We had it painted, and have received nothing by positive reviews from every sector. We fought the city for four years and won. The mural is now part of the Studio City community. Studio City needs more public art like the Great Wall. Hopfully Paul Kredkorian can make that happen with a new city law.

The City needs a cohesive signage and mural plan. How do we focus on murals when the City Attorney shamelessly attacks sponsor signage at high school football games? Let's get Trutanich elected to District Attorney so he can take Ms. Usher with him and we get back to a balance approcah.
