Getting Reformed at Pilates Studio City in Valley Village

Pilates teacher Rosann Pelayo is on a mission to help people move better.

There’s a scene in the 1995 post-apocalyptic film Waterworld in which “ancient” relics are being examined. A character picks up a strange figure-eight-shaped object – the Thighmaster – and proclaims it to be a medieval torturing device. It’s the first thing that pops into my mind when I spot the Pilates reformer machines during my first visit at Pilates Studio City’s Valley Village location, the Annex, on a Saturday afternoon. If it weren’t for the smiling faces that greeted me as I walked in, I may have headed back the other way. I imagine the conversations of curious future peoples: Is that contraption a horizontal relaxation chair, as the padded rolling board with shoulder and neck rests might suggest? Or is it a way to extract critical…

I agree, we're all Angelenos. I've always found it interesting that I can be in Valley Village one minute, and the next block is North Hollywood or Van Nuys. I've lived in L.A. my entire life and I wasn't even aware the Valley Village area had its own name up until a few years ago!   more ›

Opening and Closing

Anticipation Building For Knitting Factory's Second NoHo Location, Bow & Truss

The new restaurant/bar is scheduled to open in June.

We broke the news here on Patch back in September that Morgan Margolis, the CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment, was planning on opening a second bar/restaurant in the NoHo Arts District: What made this news so exciting is that the Knitting Factory also owns and operates The Federal Bar in NoHo, which opened in early 2011 and has become a smashing success. Although it is a still a relatively new establishment, it is difficult to imagine NoHo without the Federal. Since that time, anticipation has been building for Bow & Truss, which is scheduled to open in June, and everyone seems to be talking about it, including the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News.  You can follow Bow & Truss progress on Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/…

NE1 Skate Shop Supports Local Designers, Musicians and Artists

The store's motto is 'Anyone can be a part of this shop.'

I’m walking to NE1 Skate Shop on a Tuesday evening, and the only thing I can think of is what to say when I’m asked if I need help finding anything. Between the aroma of gourmet coffee at Republic of Pie and the scent of cheese steaks at Philadelphia Sandwiches, I become distracted and forget about coming up with a cool and convincing answer. This writer is not exactly a skater girl. I can barely rollerskate in a straight line on flat pavement, much less keep both feet planted on a board for 10 seconds.  My knowledge of tricks is only thanks to the video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and I couldn’t even pass for a poseur if I tried. I quickly realize it’s not strictly for skaters when I step inside the loft-style store. There’s something …

I must have walked by this place a hundred times and didn't even realize it was there. Maybe they should take down that poster that covers half of their window so patrons can see what's inside. Nice fit for the area.   more ›

PTA Moms Sentenced For Swindling Other Parents of Millions in Ponzi Scheme

The women took in about $14 million and paid out about $10 million in 'profits' to sustain the fraud between June 2008 and August 2010.

Two Diamond Bar PTA members were sentenced to three years in county jail for their no contest pleas today to conning seven people out of $600,000 in a Ponzi scheme involving a Disneyland milk contract. A Pomona Superior Court judge also ordered Maricela Barajas, 42, and Juliana Celeste Menefee, 51, to pay a total of $590,000, or nearly $300,000 each, to the victims of their fraud. Along with co-defendant Eva Perez, 52, the two women claimed to have exclusive rights to sell Alta Dena Dairy products at Disneyland and promised rates of return to investors of up to 100 percent, according to authorities. They were actively involved in the PTA at Armstrong Elementary School and gained the trust of more than 30 investors during organized school …
