General Manager of Neighborhood Councils to Run for City Council

BongHwan Kim to face a crowded field of potential candidates seeking to replace Councilman Eric Garcetti, who is running for mayor.

The general manager of the embattled Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE) filed Friday to run for the 13th District City Council seat. It was not immediately clear whether BongHwan Kim would step down from his city job in order to run. He was appointed to the post by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. DONE, also known as Empower LA, in partnership with the current 95 Neighborhood Councils, last year fought back a City Council attempt to merge it into the Department of Community Development. On Wednesday, DONE wrested from the City Clerk the authority to run Neighborhood Council elections. The City Council has yet to allocate funds for those elections. Among the Neighborhood Councils supervised by DONE in Valley Patch communities are: …

Midtown NoHo NC Approves Funding For Whitnall Dog Park Lights

If the council had decided against funding the lights, the decision could have turned them off at the park for the third time in a year.

At its monthly meeting on Wednesday, the Midtown NoHo Neighborhood Council voted to fund the lights at the Whitnall Off-Leash Dog Park for a year, starting in July. Last month, in what was believed to have been a close 7-6 vote, the council voted to stop funding the lights, even though the Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council had voted to fund half of the annual cost, which is $846. However, the tabulation of the votes had been miscalculated, and the vote was actually a 6-6 tie. After the meeting, the mistake was discovered, and according to Department of Neighborhood Empowerment rules, the issue had to be re-voted on, according to MTNHNC President Mary Garcia. If the council had decided against funding the lights, the decision could …

Patch reported as of April 2012 only half of Councilmember Paul Kerkorian allocated $250,000 of non-General Fund dollars has been spent. I would suggest the users of the dog park make a request now to Paul Kerkorian for the next $845 payment for the park lighting. Due to the financial state of the city all Neighborhood Council's budgets are going to be drastically cut this year. For this coming …   more ›

Obama Lands in LA Early...Heading to Studio City: Countdown to Starmageddon

It seems calm around the neighborhood only hours before President Obama comes to visit.

UPDATE: Air Force One landed a little early at 6:20 p.m. and now he is on his way to a quick speech and then to Studio City. Stay with Patch for all the latest. People are still walking their dogs up and down the tiny streets around Fryman Canyon in Studio City. If it weren't for the couple of houses with flags out front, or all the signs that say "NO PARKING THURSDAY ONLY" all around, then it would seem like business as usual. That is, except for George Clooney's house. There's a buzz of activity. Big heat lamps are lined up outside his driveway on the street. Celebrity shuttles are already lined up. Catering trucks are parked on the steep driveway. Up the hill just behind a thin layer of trees, a giant blow-up tent, about the size of a …
