Geeking Out Over Trivia

Know the name of the last man on the moon? What was the surname of the main family on Happy Days? Could you identify that old Queen song by hearing its awful techno parody?

Knowledge of random tidbits like that gives anyone a fair chance at winning at Geeks Who Drink, a pub trivia tournament that's played nationwide and kicked off at Bar One in North Hollywood earlier this month.

A quizmaster leads participants through eight rounds of eight questions with themes like "Born Too Late: Old Nick Shows Described by Tweens" and "Wildly Inappropriate First Date Movies," while others require more textbook knowledge of history and science.

Answers are written down on scoresheets and later tallied.

"I think they have a pretty good balance of easy and hard questions," said Brian James, who joined in on the second installment of Geeks Who Drink Sunday night at Bar One.

There's also audio rounds where artists and their tracks must be named by hearing a brief song clip.

Glendale resident Zoe Hyde said she's a big fan of the visual round, which entails identifying eight persons, movies or characters based on snapshots.

She recently relocated from Boston, where she first got into Geeks Who Drinks, and is glad she found a new place to play.

"We liked it so much we tried to find a bar in Los Angeles that had it," Hyde said, adding: "I like how structured it is."

Small prizes are offered throughout the night and the winning team with the most points gets a $25 gift certificate for the bar.

But for participants like James, the night's experience is just as memorable.

"People are willing to try answering anything when they're drunk, you get some pretty fun answers sometimes," he said.

Geeks Who Drink happens every Sunday at 8 p.m. at Bar One. 12518 Burbank Blvd.
