Longtime Toluca Lake resident Al Underwood has once again won the gold medal for his musketeer style mustache at this years Just For Men® National Beard & Mustache Championships held in New Orleans this past weekend.
Los Angeles established itself as the bearding capital of America with an impressive haul of six medals, three of them gold.
Underwood led LA’s charge with a perfect score of 25 points in the Musketeer category. That’s the bearding equivalent of 300 in bowling, 27 straight strikeouts in baseball, or a score of 18 for a round of golf. He won the same category last year in Las Vegas. http://beardteamusa.org/news/langum-crowned-champ-la-dominates/
Underwood is also a founding member of California Beard and Mustache Enthusiasts, a social club for all those with facial hair that they
are proud of, families who support them and friends and fans without
that simply admire them.
Toluca Lake residents may recognize Underwood and his silver haired wonder. He is often spotted at the Starbucks next to Bob's Big Boy, shopping at the local Albertson's grocery store or enjoying a beer at Timmy Nolan's Irish pub or Joes All American Bar and Grill.
“People stop me every day to chat, ask questions or take pictures with me, or rather, my mustache," he said. “Children and intoxicated women are particularly fond of it! However, it does get dangerous when one of them gets close enough to get ahold of it! Babies and ladies have a grip like you can't believe
and are at times reluctant to let go!”
