Krekorian Announces Dates for L.A. Student Media Festival

Submissions are due Feb. 28, 2014 and the LASMF is schedule for May 4, 2013 at the AT&T Center in downtown L.A.

Southern California’s only film festival intended solely for high school students kicks off its fourth year as students from throughout Los Angeles County are now invited to submit short films to the L.A. Student Media Festival.

Started in 2009 by District 2 Councilmember Paul Krekorian, the L.A. Student Media Festival invites students from any high school, public or private, in Los Angeles County to submit original films that do not exceed seven minutes in a variety of categories.

“This is an amazing opportunity for all high school students in Southern California who’ve dreamed of displaying their talents on the silver screen,” said Krekorian, who created the festival.

Any student with a creative vision and a camera is encouraged to participate and compete against some of the best student filmmakers Los Angeles County has to offer, Krekorian added.

Last year, the LASMF received nearly 200 submissions with the final 36 works shown on the big screen at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. To see last year’s winning films, including the Best of Show 2013 winner, click here.

"The festival has become an important and greatly anticipated annual event in the film-making capital of the world, and the hundreds who enter will have an opportunity not only to win great prizes, but also to be recognized with prestigious awards that could help advance their careers," he said.

Student work in the animation, comedy, commercial, drama or documentary / PSA category may be submitted and the winner in each category will win recognition as well as exciting prizes to help further their careers in cinema.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 28, 2014, and the festival is slated for May 3, 2014, at the AT&T Center in Downtown L.A.
