MUSEUM PARTY

5:30 p.m. We were just reminded on Tuesday that the turnout at our art museums is quite dismal compared to other cities. While the sprawl of Los Angeles makes it hard for those that reside in the east valley to attend museums over the hill regularly, Natural History Museum’s seasonal monthly event is worth the drive. The schedule starts at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with a discussion and tour led by Collections Managers Kimball Garrett and Jim Dines on animals that lay eggs, continues at 6:30 p.m. with a discussion on microbes, and ends with performances by Pinker Tones and Ceci Bastida in Diorama Hall. There will be a lounge open all night set to the tune of KCRW DJ’s.

DRINKS

10:30 p.m. It’s too early to go home, and the museum closed at 10. Have a nightcap in your neighborhood before turning in. I’m a veteran explorer in the L.A. bar scene, and I’ve sat in a few atrocious venues. The Valley is often disregarded as a nightlife spot, but there are many good, often hidden, watering holes. Laurel Tavern is the kind of place you meet a friend last minute for a glass of wine and a grilled artichoke. Wait, what? Yes, they have interesting gastropub appetizers for those that eat the often-required fourth meal. The exposed brick walls and center communal table add an air of urban sophistication. It is one of the best-designed bars in the East Valley. Warning: this place fills up pretty early on in the evening, and lines are a regular sight on weekends. That’s why I’m suggesting you go late! If you do end up in a line, you can busy yourself deciding over a lager or a pinot.

11938 Ventura Blvd., Studio City. (818) 506-077.

Saturday

ART

7:00 p.m. is putting gallery-goers in the action of a gallery opening. Present a dress, shirt or poster to one of the artists and they will produce a work of art on the spot. Allegedly, the pieces will then be placed on a conveyor belt. This sounds like a Willy Wonka fashion factory. If you wish to have a piece of clothing designed, be prepared to wear it and walk down the “runway” after it’s finished. Artists include Rolo CastilLo, Emek, and 7 Lightning Bolt.

5310 Lauren Canyon Blvd. (818) 762-0132. To pre-order a piece, email info@ricoadair.com. $50 for each design.

#WINNING ART

8:00 p.m.Well, we all knew this day would come. A couple of weeks ago, mixologists were asked to create a Charlie Sheen drink, and now his tiger blood has spread to the art world. I’m all about an exhibit that revolves around a respectable, talented star, like last year’s Bill Murray show. But Sheen? What are his noted accomplishments, gaining millions of followers on Twitter in light speed? Well, the art does looks pretty spectacular so far and the ’s roster doesn’t disappoint. You make a good Frankenstein, Sheen. Maybe that’s a future film role?

1928 W. Olive Ave., Burbank. (818) 972-2448. Runs through April 15.

Sunday

FILM

7:45 p.m. If fashion designers make the mistake of turning to the latest issue of Vogue for inspiration, they are missing out on accessible muses: the people in the street. Bill Cunningham shot anyone in NYC who caught his attention, and he has a varied portfolio from the New York Times to prove it. All hail candid photography.

Playing at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 in West Hollywood (8000 Sunset Blvd.) and Laemmle's Town Center 5 in Encino (17200 Ventura Blvd.).
