What's Going On This Weekend?

Here is a curated calendar of food, art, film, and events.

Friday

THEATER

8 p.m. It looks like it’s going to rain again this weekend, so plan on spending the first half of your weekend indoors. Keith Huff’s Pursued by Happiness, a comedy about exactly what the title implies, follows two 40-something biochemists. Yes, you heard that last part right. Biochemists. This isn’t your average event-planner-meets-strategic-consultant rom-com. It’s showing at the by the Road Theatre Company (which I’ve in my column). For tickets, call (877) 369-9112.

MOVIE NIGHT

10 p.m. If you feel like staying home and watching a movie on a Friday night for the second night in a row, I won’t judge you. Rain makes me want to cover myself in quilt and sit inches away from my electric fireplace, while engaging myself with some sort of pop culture medium. It’s like a free sick day from reservations, lines, parking, and stubbed toes. weekly movie night solves this problem. You can trick yourself into thinking you’re seeing a movie at home; just leave your slippers at home. Movies start at 10 p.m. and midnight.

10149 Riverside Dr. Toluca Lake. (818) 763-5200.

Saturday

FLEA MARKET + FOOD + MUSIC

11 a.m. Food trucks are invading North Hollywood again, and this time, they’ve brought friends. Mikey Sabatella, Republic of Letters, Don Swanson, and more artists will perform at the NoHo Food Truck Fest and Flea Market. Craft artists and shops will be on hand to sell jewelry, paper goods, and paintings. The proceeds benefit a local dog rescue organization. This kind of sounds like a farmers market, without that washing vegetables and cooking at home part. The event runs until 5 p.m.

11458 Burbank Blvd. http://www.nohofoodtruckfest.com.

ART

6 p.m. It’s (yes, still) Women’s History Month and the Art Directors Guild is hosting an opening reception of “Women! Images & Interpretations 2” at in the Lankershim Arts Center. Paintings, photography and mixed media will be included in the gallery. “The Little Frenchie” truck will serve food outside.

5108 Lankershim Blvd.

V-DAY

7 p.m.: The Vagina Monologues was my comedy show of choice in college. The wry, self-deprecating humor directed at both sexes was always engaging to watch. The award-winning play comes to this weekend, but with a new twist: it will star Dollface Dames, a local burlesque team. V-Day is an international movement to end violence against women. What better way to celebrate women’s liberation than with a burlesque play? Proceeds benefit the Downtown Women’s Center.

4923 Lankershim Blvd. Tickets $10. http://thedollfacedames.eventbrite.com.

Sunday

FOREIGN FILM

5:00 p.m. The limited engagement of Even the Rain ends this week at the Egyptian Theatre. The Spanish film follows a filmmaker who goes to shoot a film about Christopher Columbus in Bolivia during the Cochabamba water crisis. Bonus: it stars Gael García Bernal.

 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood $11.

ART FILM

7:10 p.m. Filmmaker Tchavdar Georgiev with hold a Q&A session after the screening of “The Desert of Forbidden Art,” a documentary about millions of dollars worth of banned Soviet art that was hidden in a remote location. Laemmle’s Sunset 5 will also have a Q&A session after the film on Saturday. See the trailer here.

8000 Sunset Blvd. $11. http://www.laemmle.com.
