Relay For Life Participants Plan Donna Summer Tribute in Studio City

The Studio City/NoHo Relay for Life will walk to Donna Summer tunes.

This weekend, a 24-hour ceremony Relay for Life (www.relayforlife.org/studiocitynohoca) will kick off from Walter Reed Middle School, but some of the organizers are now trying to add a little swing to their step and encouraging people to bring the music of Donna Summer, who died of lung cancer Thursday.

The Relay For Life of Studio City‐North Hollywood will be held on May 19 and 20, 2012 at Walter Reed Junior High School. Teams of 5 to 20 people create a relay by taking turns walking, running, or strolling around the school track for 24 consecutive hours. Participants will camp out with family and friends, enjoying music, entertainment, food, and friendship while building team spirit to help in the fight against cancer. The event’s 24 hours symbolize the difficulties cancer patients can face in just one 24‐hour period.

The group will honor cancer survivors at opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. as they walk the traditional first lap. At 9 p.m. the lights go out for the Luminaria (candle lighting) ceremony where they plan to honor those who have won the battle and remember those who didn’t.

The event culminates with a powerful Fight Back Closing Ceremony as they continue in the fight even after Relay is over. This 24‐hour celebration unifies the Studio City‐North Hollywood communities for a cause that touches everyone. Relay for life will make you laugh and cry, and will definitely be an experience of a lifetime.

Relay for life is a completely volunteer and community driven event. Volunteers are always needed.

A recent post calls for the Donna Summer tribute:

Donna Summer, the worldwide Queen of Disco, died yesterday after a long battle against cancer. Donna Summer is survived by her husband Bruce Sudano and her daughters Brooklyn, Amanda and Mimi. On Saturday, May 19, the North Hollywood community is getting together to combat cancer at the Studio City/NoHo Relay for Life. Let's make a playlist of Donna Summer songs (adding to our Beastie Boys playlist) and celebrate her amazing life, career and music that made us all dance.

Donna Summer, was both a singer and songwriter who came to define the disco era with a string of No. 1 hits and her beauty-queen diva look. She was a five-time Grammy Award winner. Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard chart, and she also charted four number-one singles in the United States within a 13-month period. Her top single hits include:

"Love to Love You Baby"
"I Feel Love"
"Last Dance "
"MacArthur Park"
"Heaven Knows"
"Hot Stuff"
"Bad Girls"
"Dim All the Lights"
"No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)"
"On the Radio"
"The Wanderer"
"Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger)"
"She Works Hard for the Money"
"This Time I Know It's for Real"

For a Tribute to Donna Summer - get up and dance to "Last Dance." Many of you know the words by heart. For our younger viewers, even as disco faded, Donna Summer's music has remained a fixture in dance clubs, sampled and remixed into many of the songs you hear today. So take a trip back in music history and see if disco makes you want to get up and dance.

Queen of Disco - You will be missed!

I've done this before - what a great idea to add her music - what a loss but the music will never die.
