VIDEO: Harry Berman Ceramic Arts Turns 40

Berman has taught how to turn clay into art since 1972 out of his studio on Cahuenga Boulevard. He's hosting an art sale on Nov. 17-18 in honor of his 40th anniversary.

Long before the NoHo Arts District came to be, Harry Berman was molding clay into artwork at his North Hollywood studio.

In 1972, he opened Berman Ceramic Arts at 5622 Cahuenga Blvd. and has been passing on his skills to students ever since.

"Clay is just this magical material that enables you to not do anything you want, but almost anything after you've developed technique," he said.

Now a Thousand Oaks Resident, Berman grew up in North Hollywood and developed a passion for ceramics when he was 15. He eventually earned a fine arts degree and also spent years building kilns, which are ovens used for ceramics.

Berman gives lessons to beginners as well as advanced students, some as old as 90, and many professional artists also use his shop to give birth to their own creations.

He's hosting a celebration for his four decades in business at his studio on Nov. 17-18. Some of his students will be selling their artwork at the event.
