NHWNC Sponsors First Town Hall Meeting

On a moonlit early November eve in West North Hollywood, Los Angeles District Two City Council Person Paul Krekorian addressed an interested and educated audience at the inaugural Town Hall Meeting sponsored by the North Hollywood West Neighborhood Council at the Saticoy Elementary School Auditorium.
As President of the NHWNC, my opening speech centered mostly on the many achievements of this Neighborhood Council since I was elected in January.
Chief among these the weeding and clean-up of the Whitsett Slope this past March with the help of the North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council, USC Valley Alumnae Association, Krekorian’s office, the Graffiti Busters, NoHo West stakeholders and other local organizations.
In January the Whitsett Hillside Slope will be planted.
Other accomplishments of this neighborhood council this year include sponsoring a community festival this past June, a neighborhood cleanup along Sherman Way and Coldwater Canyon, a Youth Poetry Workshop in September, an Easter egg hunt and Haunted House at the Valley Plaza Recreation Center, funded a new P.A. system for Saticoy Elementary School, and a storage container for East Valley Baseball League, worked with other neighborhood councils to stop a proposed ordinance to make property owners responsible for sidewalk repairs due to city planted root damage, received a certificate of recognition from the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment which oversees the 95 neighborhood councils in Los Angeles, were featured on KPCC Radio’s Morning Edition on Thursday, September 9th.
It should also be made clear that this on-going series of Town Hall Meetings are not about massaging this neighborhood council’s ego, but promoting direct dialogue between our stakeholders and Los Angeles city government and making city officials personally aware of our community’s concerns and needs and our stakeholders more aware about how the city works and how their participation can help improve the area.
We also want to encourage stakeholders that are not already on the board to be a candidate in the upcoming elections in March.  If you have always wanted to make a difference and change the status quo, this is your shining moment.
The City Council Member then gave a brief speech focusing mainly on the city’s budget deficit, and the budget, which he emphasized is getting more manageable.   The City Council Person also mentioned the economy which he said is getting better.
He then pointed-out that the fire department, which has not hired a new firefighter in about five years, is a top priority.  The City Council Member also said that his office had gone the extra step in getting the city to trim dangerous trees and branches.
City Council Person Krekorian finished the 70 minute visit by answering questions concerning a stop sign on North Saticoy Street and Belaire Avenue, a lack of lighting on Rodes Avenue after 7pm and sidewalk repair which he underscored as a major, but tricky issue because sometimes a tree belongs to the city while the sidewalk belongs to the property owner.
The next Town Hall Meeting takes place on January 29th with featured speaker, North Hollywood Police Captain Steven M. Carmona.
