Check out Grandma's Recipe Box - I did!

What I found in my Grandmother’s small wooden recipe box was more than my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe.  I took a ride down memory lane via childhood dinners and desserts.  Grandma’s old-fashioned script on three by five index cards laying out ingredients and instructions filled me with happiness and thoughts of family moments long forgotten. 

I thumbed through the cards and enjoyed the detail my Grandma Peg had taken after a recipe had been received with ooohs and ahhhs.  What fun I had remembering her dinnertime disclaimer “taste your food first as I cook with salt”.  No kidding, every dinner started with this comment.  We all dutifully waited while she took the first bite before digging in.  Was it Emily Post who said the hostess takes the first bite?  Well, we followed this rule, and dig in we did.  Eagerly anticipated meals filled with greens, potatoes, a roast of some kind and her (still secret) salad dressing.  I continue to search for the salad dressing recipe!  Second helpings all ‘round and then Grandpa Doc’s dessert!  Custards, pies, pumpkin anything and his chocolate sauce over ice cream!

What an adventure this wooden box has been for me.  Imagine a 50 year-old recipe in my grandfather’s handwriting for granola!! I am a big one for rainy day baking and will have the granola ingredients at the ready when those first drops fall.
