Blaze at Old North Hollywood Medical Center

Debris catches fire during demolition work at former hospital, but is quickly extinguished, fire official reports.

The Los Angeles Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire Tuesday afternoon at the former North Hollywood Medical Center on Riverside Drive, which is undergoing demolition work. There were no injuries, according to Batallion Chief Peter Benesch.

The blaze was thought to have been started when hot metal discarded by welders working at the site went down an elevator shaft, setting fire to some debris at the bottom of the shaft. The fire spread to the basement and part of the first floor before being extinguished.

The television series Scrubs was filmed at the hospital.
