Metro: Earlier Weekend Freeway Closures Necessary Before Carmageddon II

Sections of the 405 Freeway need to close on weekends in September to prepare for the final demolition of the Mulholland Bridge.

Set your clocks and mark your calendars: preparations for Carmageddon II will begin as early as next week Saturday as crews plan two directional freeway closures to get ready for the demolition of the remaining half of the Mulholland Bridge.

On Sept. 29 and Sept. 30, officials will launch the second I-405 Freeway closure, also known as Carmageddon II, requiring motorists to rethink their travel routes or stay put in their communities.

But Los Angeles Metro put out an advisory Friday afternoon to alert the public that the disruption will come even earlier. Two, 10-hour directional freeway closures will be required on the weekends leading up to Carmageddon II (see the attached flyer).

The second full closure of the freeway is another phase of the $1 billion Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project. and city officials , warning residents to stay away from the 405 during the 53-hour closure starting Sept. 29 to avoid major traffic jams.

For the Mulholland Bridge's final demolition, Metro reports the contractor will remove the supporting wood structures called "falsework" from the newly constructed south bridge side and will adjust Mulholland Drive’s roadway alignment and elevation to meet the bridge’s new approaches. See the schedule of advance closures below.

Closure Schedule Southbound directional full freeway closure between 101 Freeway to the Getty Center Drive ramps (ramps may close as early as 7 p.m.) Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 p.m. to Sunday, Sept. 9, at 9 a.m.
Northbound directional full freeway closure between the Getty Center Drive ramps to the Ventura off-ramp (ramps may close as early as 7 p.m.) Saturday, Sept. 15, at 11 p.m. to Sunday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m.
Mulholland Bridge Closure Friday, Sept. 14, at 10 p.m. to Sunday, Sept. 16, at 8 a.m.
Mulholland Drive, from the west side of the bridge to Casiano Road Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 24, at 6 a.m.

The California Department of Transportation will list the upcoming directional freeway closures on its changeable message signs in the project area beginning Saturday.

Sepulveda Boulevard will remain open and used as a detour during the full directional freeway closures, and nightly closures of Mulholland Drive, from the west side of the bridge to Casiano Road, will continue until the bridge demolition activity ends.

Directional freeway closures are necessary for the contractor to completely remove temporary bridge supports over the center of the freeway without creating a safety risk to passing motorists, according to Metro. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained and pedestrians will be rerouted to a safe area
outside of the construction zone. Construction work is subject to the weather and subject to change.

Hi! Yes, something is definitely happening there. I've stopped by a few times in hopes of bumpingRead More into the new owner but I haven't been so lucky. I've left my business card with a few construction workers but no one has gotten back to me so far. From what the workers told me, it's going to be a new restaurant. Those are all the details I have for now, but I'll keep you posted as soon as I found out more. Thanks!
ok thank you
