Pledge to Go Ped on National Walking Day

A local magazine is challenging people in Los Angeles to incorporate more walking into their everyday lives.

National Walking Day is on Wednesday and L.A. Magazine wants Angelenos looking to participate to make an even bigger pledge: swear off driving if an errand is only two miles away from your home.

Columnist Alissa Walker, who writes about her experience of becoming a dedicated pedestrian, notes she's saved thousands of dollars on automobile expenses and shed 10 pounds in under a year.

Those interested in making the commitment to the "Better of Ped" challenge can sign a petition here.

And North Hollywood residents may have an easier time giving the challenge a shot because the community is more walkable than most of the Southland.

Last fall, the district as a whole was rated a 74 by Walk Score, meaning "most errands can be accomplished by foot." Individual neighborhoods like the NoHo Arts District got scores in the upper 80s because of their proximity to storefronts and parks.
