Messaround shotcaller Jonny Whiteside is
thrilled to feature another visit from the astonishing GOLDEN SOMBRERO.
Spearheaded by ex-Gun Club-Pontiac Bros.-Liquor
Giants ax man WARD DOTSON and his longtime collaborator STEVE K, this
kicking, brilliant trio unfailingly deliver a head-spinning selection of
vintage Adult Contemporary and AM pop radio numbers. Anchored by
jolting jazz-informed trapsman CHARLES MAXEY, each performance by
these men is never less than revelatory by its mix of naked exuberance
and passionate ka-pow.
THE SLOTHS, garage rock
thrillers who first roared into life in '65 when the guys were just ages
15-17 and in their brief run, hit all the critical local go-go's--The
Sea Witch, The Hullabaloo, Hollywood Palladium, The Whiskey, Bito Lidos,
Pandora's Box--splitting bills with such colleagues as The Doors, Love,
The Seeds. Broken up by the summer of 1966, the Sloth's left behind a single 45 "Makin' Love," a brilliant slice of horny primitivo that was
too hot for the airwaves but whose subsequent 21st century rediscovery
has elevated the Sloths to Olympian heights--the record now goes for
$6,550.00!! Back for another mad Messaround session, the Sloths are most
assuredly gonna lay down some soul-shattering rock & roll truth.
Rockabilly Lothario BRIAN HOGAN is a high voltage showman, an
entertainer who blends hard-charging old school rock 'n' roll with broad
theatrical flair and a striking presentation. Brandishing his guitar
like a weapon and frequently leaping from the stage, mid-song, to
infiltrate and engage the crowd with a fast-paced series of unusual
face-to-face exchanges, Hogan's demonstrable involvement and almost
confrontational audience participation have an invariably electrifying
effect. With a rich, lustrous set of baritone pipes and plenty of dark
and delirious original compositions, Hogan always goes in for the kill even as he’s raising the rafters.
A true rebel child of the
South, TONYA WATTS is the strutting epitome of the genuine outlaw spirit
in country music. Authentic, fearless, strikingly beautiful, the Alabama-born renegade’s mixture of soulful songwriting, impassioned
vocal delivery and kicking, hard-edged musicality is downright
intoxicating. Watts is a formidable lyricist, an artist who’s
penetrating, strikingly original songs range from impassioned romantic
laments to withering statements on injustice to roaring honky tonk
rockers and dangerously expressive erotic statements. Hers is a very
powerful creative arsenal, one that has gained the country veteran
alliances with such kindred spirits as David Allan Coe, Hank III and
Jamey Johnson -- and we are downright thrilled to have her back at the
Messaround!
LEAKING PIGS, led by teenage visionary WOLF
WOODCOCK, convene for another crafty, drastic session of severely
original rock & roll. The high velocity at which this band
progresses and reinvents itself has been consistently impressive and
today they will definitely reach a bold new altitude. At the Messaround,
we don't toss the word "originality" around lightly, but these kids
have a natural-fact instinct which allows them to excel at a uniquely
individuated brand of expressive and indescribably engrossing rock &
roll.
