North Hollywood Teen Dies After Boxing at Local Gym, Police Say
The boy is identified as Raul Alvarez Jr.
A 16-year-old boy died at a hospital after being brought there from a boxing gym in Burbank where he had been sparring, authorities said today.
The teen died about 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, said Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.
The boy was identified as Raul Alvarez Jr. of North Hollywood, according to the coroner's office. An autopsy was pending.

Police officers happened to be at the hospital on an unrelated matter when the boy was brought there about 6:45 p.m. Thursday by Burbank Fire Department paramedics from Pullman's Gym at 4320 W. Magnolia Blvd., Ryburn said.
"He complained of pain from light sparring while boxing," Ryburn said. "While at the hospital, the male suddenly went unconscious. All efforts by medical personnel to revive the male were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later."

The investigation was being conducted by the coroner's office, with assistance from the Burbank Police Department.
