Alleged DUI Driver Crashes Trying to Flee Cops

By City News Service

A man was taken into custody Thursday and faces DUI charges after crashing his mother's new SUV while trying to avoid a police stop, police said.

Officers stopped the man for a drunk-driving check around midnight as he was traveling eastbound in the 12200 block of Oxnard Street, said Sgt. Mike Cammert of the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Station.

Cammert said that as the officers walked toward the vehicle, a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, the driver accelerated away and attempted to turn left onto the northbound onramp of the Hollywood (170) Freeway.

A short time later, as the officers began their pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle, crashing it into the side of the onramp, Cammert said, adding that the vehicle was totaled.

The officers were told by the driver, a man in his 20s, that the vehicle was his mother's new car, Cammert said.

"He was more concerned about how his mother was going to take it than being arrested for drunk-driving," he said.
