Bicyclist Killed in Collision Identified

The victim was heading west on Oxnard Street during the early morning hours of Oct. 12.

UPDATE: The victim was identified as Jose Juan Heredia, 64, of North Hollywood, said LA County Coroner Spokesperson Craig Harvey.

A bicyclist in his 60s was killed Friday in a collision with a vehicle in the North Hollywood area, police said.

The man died at the scene of the crash, which happened about 6 a.m. at Oxnard Street and Radford Avenue, according to Richard French of the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of kin.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man was riding west on Oxnard Street and the vehicle was southbound on Radford Avenue and turning right onto Oxnard Street when the collision happened, French said.

The motorist remained at the scene and was interviewed by police. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

There was no immediate arrest.

This is such a tragedy! I walk my dog and cross at that intersection all the time! I don't understand how something this bad could happen so close to home!

My heart goes out to this man's family. When I think of all the times I rode my bike through that intersection, on my way to Jr and Sr High School, I get chills. I guess it must've been dark out and he was hard to see? At least the person who hit him stayed, I get so upset reading about all the hit-and-run drivers in the Valley.

http://www.facebook.com/events/155640534582355/?ref=ts&fref=ts We are leading a bicycle ride tomorrow that will also be a tribute to Mr. Heredia. At the end of the ride, we will complete and chain his ghost bike to the intersection in his memory. Please feel free to join us during or after the ride. Vigil candles and anything else to aid his spirit in transition are greatly appreciated. Brought to you by H.O.T. Valley Ride and the ghost bike coalition.

I am so disappointed to see this. As a lifelong cyclist, every time I see a bicycle riding on the wrong side of the street, I want to stop and talk to them. It's SO dangerous, because motorists don't naturally expect somebody coming up the left side of the road. RIP to the rider.
