Did You Hear an Explosion? Many in NoHo and Studio City Did

Sonic booms and other recent loud noises are also reported in Utah and on the East Coast.

The Los Angeles Police Department North Hollywood Division received numerous reports of an explosion in the North Hollywood/Studio City area Tuesday night but were not able to determine the source of the blast, which was first reported around 9:30 p.m., according to City News Service.

Police searched the area for a half hour Tuesday night and received numerous calls about the noise, the Los Angeles Times reported. Some people thought it had originated from the North Hollywood Metro station, while others reported hearing the explosion in Studio City.

Twitter users were buzzing about the noise.

"Um. weird. I'm telling u guys - CANNON!!!" tweeted @NegativeNatalie.

"Totally heard huge explosion somewhere in North Hollywood right now, and now lots of sirens and helicopters..why?" tweeted @filmester.

"LOUD explosion in studio city/northhollywood! WHAT WAS THAT?!" tweeted @marthabeans.

A strange, sonic boom-like noise was also reported in Utah Tuesday night around around 9 p.m., and some Twitter users implemented the hashtag #utboom to discuss the noise. The Standard Examiner reported:

The rumbling wasn’t caused by an earthquake, but data shows there were at least two sonic booms traveling through the atmosphere shortly after 9 p.m., Jim Pechmann, a seismologist with the University of Utah, said late Tuesday night.

People on the East Coast reported a loud explosion or sonic boom on Jan. 5, according to a report on Marblehead Patch.

We heard it, in Studio City. Totally freaked out my kid. Would really like to know what it was.

There is only one explanation for simultaneous sonic booms in California and Utah. Superman has returned!
Richard Niederberg January 9, 2013 at 01:41 pm
You want to hear a real 'BOOM'? Just come to the Re-enactment of the signing of the treaty bringing California into the United States, with a nice loud CANNON aimed at the Universal City office buildings across the street, at Campo de Cahuenga, on Sunday. 3919 Lankershim Blvd, Studio City 91604! Check out Campo de Cahuenga!

Perhaps they were just warming up the cannon and getting ready for Sunday.

I heard it...looked to me like a small cloud of smoke was over near Camarillo/Bellflower in NoHo when I looked out our window.
Caroline OConnell January 9, 2013 at 02:33 pm
I heard it (near Riverside and Tujunga), sounded like an explosion.
Rich Addams January 9, 2013 at 03:14 pm
Heard it! THought it was like the Space Shuttle coming over...maybe it was one of those UFOs that seem to invade 101 that time of the morning :)
Adam January 9, 2013 at 03:23 pm
I heard it too, near Camarillo and Cahuenga, and I also saw the small white cloud that Mike mentions. It looked like smoke to me, too.

The explosion was from the 134 near Cahuenga/101 interchange. A few minutes after the explosion, sirens/fire/ambulances raced to 134, where there was a huge, multi-car accident. Its odd (but not surprising) the cops didn't figure this out. 134/101 was a standstill for an hour.

I was there when it happened, @ Henry's Tacos! Some big 300# dude ate 4 bean burritos & blew a hole in his jeans in the parking lo! L00k @ the wall, its even damaged!
Jane January 9, 2013 at 05:50 pm
The mulit car accident happened well before the "boom". I drove by the accident on my way home - all the emergency personnel were on site - the boom happened at least an hour to 1 1/2 hours later

I give this a 9 1/2. (but I think it was an aerial fireworks blast)

I live on la maida just west of lankershim and the explosion sounded like it was right outside my window. At first, I thought they finally blew up the KFC! Unfortunately, not the case. Definately sounded like an explosion and not a car crash. A few neighbors said they saw a flash of white light seconds before they heard the explosion. Bizarre!
Marvin January 10, 2013 at 02:31 am
I had the exact same experience as Mike. A puff of white smoke in the sky near La Maida and Bellflower. I think it was a large firework of some kind. The puff of smoke wasn't as large as you would expect compared to the loudness.

i did not hear it at all since i get lots of noise from the van nuys airport i live just a block away from van nuys airport, the tower did not report anything.

I agree with Mike and Adam about seeing the small white cloud after the explosion or boom. I was getting ready for bed then saw a bright white flash followed by a boom a half a second later . I looked outside my window in North Hollywood and saw a small quick moving cloud outside my window. The police helicopters came minutes later. I thought it was just another illegal firework being shot up again that happens alot here in Noho.

Heard it as well from Riverside / Colfax area. Followed by sirens. Listened to LAFD on the scanner. Several units were dispatched to investigate. Accident on the freeway was suspected, but ruled out as it occurred before the explosion. Does, in my opinion, sound like kids setting off a massive cherry bomb left over from NYE.

my son and I heard the loud boom from inside our home, in the city of Arleta! We paused and were amazed at how long it took for the echo to fade out; like 3 seconds! Since then, we've listened to recorded sonic booms produced by the USAF SR71 Blackbird. It's boom and echo are identical to the sound we heard on Jan 4th; it must have been produced by a supersonic aircraft. Maybe the Aurora??

We heard it in Valley Village, and it seemed to us that it came from around Magnolia and Laurel Canyon.
maria muse January 10, 2013 at 02:34 pm
We heard it in the toluca lake region. It was very loud and in no way an accident.

Did someone's meth lab explode? :-)
Sarah January 28, 2013 at 07:03 pm
I live in the same location, and it sounded like it came from the complex next to mine because it was so close. I didn't run outside, so I cannot confirm the smoke.

Better still, individual investors who would struggle to manage a portfolio of such specialised businesses can diminish the risks inherent in this sector by means of diversification through pooled funds – such as unit and investment trusts. Not every acorn grows into an oak – and many bright ideas fall by the wayside – but skilled stockpickers should ensure their funds contain sufficient winners to make good losses on failures. http://www.mybudgetingworksheet.com

Dear tbs, Deon Coles black box is the worst tv show ever. Though it is hosted by a black man, it'sRead More a show based on pointing fun and rude Racist jokes directed toward black people. If there was a white host it would be considered racist but because a black man was appointed to be host , you might have figured we wouldn't be offended but we are and I can't speak for all but I feel like resist jokes aren't ok regardless of who is telling them and I would like tbs to take down this show or atleast change the points in the show ! -signed, Kalil Stimpson

First of all, Bill, a funniest new comic in LA NOT being gay would be news. In addition, being aRead More comedian myself, I can tell you most gay comedians are not as bigoted as you suggest.
