Distraught Valley Teen Goes Missing, Police Need Public's Help

Luis Alberto Ortiz was dealing with an unspecified medical condition that may have led him to become suicidal.

A 17-year-old boy described as distraught went missing in Pacoima today after stabbing himself in the hand with a knife during an argument with family members, police said.

Luis Alberto Ortiz, who was dealing with an unspecified medical condition that may have led him to become suicidal, was last seen about 12:45 p.m., riding a bicycle north on Bartee Avenue from Gain Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

He lives with his family in the 13700 block of Gain Street, police officials said.

Ortiz is Hispanic, has a light complexion, stands 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He has brown hair and eyes and a scar on his stomach, according to the LAPD.

He was wearing a gray T-shirt, yellow shorts and gray shoes when he was last seen and may have been riding a black BMX-type bicycle.

Anyone with information concerning his whereabouts was urged to contact the LAPD's Mission Station at (818) 838-9800.
