Driver Reportedly Helps Stop Suicidal Teen Girl from Jumping Off 170 Freeway Overpass

Traffic comes to a halt in the southbound lanes as multiple agencies enact a rescue at the Whitsett Avenue bridge, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

A 16-year-old girl who had climbed out onto the ledge of the Whitsett Avenue bridge overlooking the 170 Freeway in North Hollywood was prevented from jumping by a driver who pulled over to help, according to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News.

The driver, Jay Shaefer, who works for Drain Router Plumbing of Canoga Park, grabbed the girl through some safety bars and held on until other drivers and rescue workers arrived to help the girl to safety, according to the report.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon and brought traffic to a stop on the southbound lanes.

I was returning home from the market when I heard about on the radio and looked up towards the 170 freeway and saw all the south bound traffic at a standstill. She was so lucky to have him stop and help her until more help arrived.
