Lankershim Hit-and-Run Victim Identified

Richard Slate died Sunday when he was hit by a GMC truck while crossing the street.

Authorities Thursday identified a 74-year-old man who was fatally struck by a vehicle while he was walking in North Hollywood.

Richard Slate died at a hospital, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. He had lived in a local trailer park and was walking to a fast food restaurant for breakfast, according to neighbors.

A man was arrested as a possible hit-and-run suspect a couple of hours after Slate's fatal injury, which occurred at about 5 a.m. Sunday in the 8100 block of Lankershim Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

It was unclear if the arrested man was the suspected driver or an alleged accomplice, according to the preliminary report by police. The investigation was continuing. Police asked anyone with information to call the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8000, and said all tips can be made anonymously.
