UPDATE: LAPD Bomb Squad Shuts Down Ventura Blvd. in Studio City

A 'suspicious item' turns out to be a laptop computer, police say.

A suspicious item found this morning near a busy Studio City intersection turned out to be a laptop computer, Los Angeles police said.

Initial reports indicated a bomb squad was sent to the 12900 block of Boulevard, after authorities were notified about the object at 8 a.m.Ventura. , who is a regular and reliable commenter here on Patch, reported that the closure was in fact not near 12900 Ventura but closer to Coldwater Canyon Avenue.

Traffic was kept out of the area while the bomb squad inspected the object.

Correction: The closure was at Coldwater Canyon. I just returned home from shopping at Ralphs -- Coldwater has been reopened.

I find the fact checking at The Studio City Version of The Patch to be misleading ,inaccurate and headline grabbing. 12900 Ventura Blvd is the corner of Coldwater Canyon Blvd and Ventura Blvd (the site of The Wells Fargo Bank) not Laurel Canyon Blvd. The difference is over 1 mile and the inaccuracy is embarrassing for any editor or reporting service. While I appreciate the notification, a little accuracy would also be appreciated.

Initial reports from City News Service indicated the closure was near Laurel Canyon. Sometimes we have to go with the best info that is available at the time of the breaking news. Breaking news reports are always followed up on and updated as more information is available. On your other comment, I'm not sure why you would think "Laurel Canyon" is in someway more headline grabbing than "Coldwater Canyon." I do appreciate the feedback as always, but that one has me scratching my head.

Hi Jeff, the story has been corrected. For some news stories, we get breaking news details from a news wire alert, and occasionally a reported street name is incorrect. It was an honest mistake and has been corrected. Thanks for your input.

I would also add that the address the City News Service reported was 12900 Ventura Blvd., which is very near Laurel Canyon. I did of course look up the location before posting the story to "fact check" the accuracy. We are always doing the best we can here to keep our readers updated with the most current breaking news. We do rely on some other news agencies, including City News Service, to help us from time to time.

You all at Patch do a great job. We've never had this good a local news source before. Even the NY Times publishes corrections. It's an unavoidable part of the process.

Dear Craig and Anthony, I appreciate all your hard work and input. I appreciate you also taking the time to answer my question. However, I also fact checked the 12900 address because I live very near Laurel Canyon which begins at 12000 Ventura Blvd and it is very clear when you know the area even by looking at Google maps or Yahoo Patch Maps that it is the corner of Coldwater and Ventura. To say its near Laurel Canyon is stretching the area map. It's like saying 99 is close to 25 rather than 99 is closer to 100. I am being picky and mean no disrespect. You are doing a great job.

You are correct, Jeff, the address is near Coldwater. To explain-- from the time the news story hit the wire to when it was up on Patch was about two minutes. I saw the City News Service story, which said it was near Laurel. I quickly Googled the address to verify the location, but I now believe I must have typed in 12000 or 12100 and not realized it. That map showed the address near Laurel, which added up to what the CNS story stated. The double whammy mistake added up to the wrong general location being identified in the story. I do know the address system in the Valley very well since I'm a reporter here, and if I'd had a few minutes to think about it I would have realized that it didn't quite add up, but as I said the time from the news breaking to being up on the site was about two minutes, and between that time, the story changed. It was initially a bomb squad investigating a suspicious package, and about a few seconds after I posted the story, it was updated to state there was no danger and the package was just a computer, so I had to quickly update. It's a high-wire act, reporting breaking news.
