A man jumped in front of a Metro Red Line train at the Hollywood/Western Station tonight in what authorities said was a suicide attempt.

Surveillance cameras from the station showed the man standing on the platform and looking both ways before jumping in front of the train, which was bound for Union Station, said Lt. Mike Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Transit Services Bureau.

The man was hospitalized. The extent of his injuries was not known, according to Mendoza.

"He's very lucky to be alive," Mendoza said.

Train service was delayed for a few minutes by the suicide attempt, which occurred at 10:55 p.m., Mendoza said.

If the man wanted to kill himself why is he lucky to be alive?I could see if he accidentally fell off the platform and the train came along hitting him then he would be lucky to be alive, but if he wanted to die why is he lucky to be alive?

Authorities believe it was a suicide attempt?? How astute on their part. Are they sure he just didn't want a free ride?
