Mystery of North Hollywood Truck Explosion Reportedly Solved

Two things that shouldn't be mixed together is what triggered the Tuesday blast around midnight, according to authorities.

A man with minor burn injuries walked into Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Station early Tuesday with a theory on what might have sparked an explosion traced to the back of a pickup truck around midnight.

The Los Angeles Times reports that he plugged in his cellphone charger while trying to get high by huffing propane in the cab--a combo dangerous enough to spark the big boom.

“This guy was a very luck guy, this was an unusual situation,” police Sgt. Glenn McNeil told Patch Wednesday.

He added that something did mix with the propane to trigger an explosion, but could not confirm that it was the circumstances reported by the Times.

The blast rocked the neighborhood around 11318 Miranda St. around 12:25 a.m. and shattered windows at least one home.

After the explosion, the man reportedly stumbled onto a nearby lawn before making his way to the police station, McNeil told Patch.

He said the man was not arrested because there was no crime and that an investigation was ongoing.
