North Hollywood Man Fatally Struck by Bus Identified

Authorities Friday released the name of a 21-year- old man who was struck and killed by a Metro bus along with his pet dog when he apparently tried to retrieve the dog after it ran after a ball on a North Hollywood street.

Paramedics were sent to the 8100 block of Webb Avenue about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Metro spokesman Luis Inzunza said the fatally injured man -- identified by the coroner's office as Xavier Lee Shelby of North Hollywood -- had chased after the dog after it ran into the street, and both were hit by the southbound Line 94 bus, which was carrying three passengers. No one was injured on the bus, Inzunza said.

The driver tried to swerve from the No. 1 lane to the No. 2 lane, but was unable to avoid hitting the man and dog, Inzunza said.

A witness told KCAL9 that the victim had thrown a ball to play fetch with his dog, but the ball bounced into the street.
