12:54 a.m. Lindley Avenue and Chatsworth Street, Granada Hills
A Devonshire Division LAPD patrol officer is in a foot chase, pursuing an alleged "GTA (grand theft auto) suspect" who is running southbound on Lindley Avenue from Chatsworth Street, into the area of a large apartment complex. 1:00 a.m. Lindley Avenue and Chatsworth Street, Granada Hills
The LAPD air unit and the ground units communicate about the possible distance the GTA suspect could have covered in the time that has passed. Air 11 advises that on the western border of the apartment complex, there is a dirt lot where tall electrical towers stand, and next to that is a flood control channel that is shallow and not difficult to cross. Air 11 tells that primary patrol unit that the supect could have easily continued beyond the flood control channel, heading toward Etiwanda Avenue.
1:02 a.m. Lindley Avenue and Chatsworth Street, Granada Hills
Air 11 advises, with the possibility that the suspect could have crossed over the flood control channel, greatly increasing the number of streets that the suspect could run and hide, means they would need ten more patrol cars to cover the extended perimeter. Air 11 asks the primary patrol unit to make the decision about whether or not to extend the perimeter and call in more patrol units.
1:03 a.m. Lindley Avenue and Chatsworth Street, Granada Hills
The primary unit decides to use the existing Devonshire LAPD patrol units around the apartment complex, the flood control channel and the properties across the channel; but would not add more patrol cars to the perimeter.
The officers have managed to get a possible name of the alleged car thief, and if they can positively match the identification with the suspect at large, that would be an alternative resolution.
