At about 5:30 p.m., the skies opened up. Thunder and a few flashes of lightning opened up over Studio City.
Some of the roads near Ventura Boulevard and Vineland were flooded.
Another report was that the roads near the North Hollywood Toyota near the 101 Freeway offramp was flooded, with water half a tire high.
Grant Miles, who has a weather station in Studio City, said, "This was unexpected - rain rates are exceeding an inch per hour here in the eastern part of Studio City. Looks like the cell is moving off northeast into Toluca Lake towards Burbank."
The Studio City Weather Center founded by Miles in 2010 and continues to deliver forecast details and warning details for the Studio City area, reported:
There was just a product of enough moisture available and certainly enough heat and lift to cause some convection. We observed moderate to heavy rain at Studio City Weather Center, with rain gauges recording about 0.13" of rain in about a twenty minute period, which is a pretty decent amount for a summer pop-up shower. The cell is currently moving slowly Northeast towards Burbank with some residual light showers remaining over the Studio City/North Hollywood area, and those should end shortly.
