Tip Leads Detectives to Arrest Subway Slasher Suspect

By City News Service

A suspect has been arrested for the fatal stabbing of a man on a Metro Red Line subway train at a station beneath Vermont Avenue last week.

Angelo Correia, 25, was arrested Friday at his North Hollywood home and was held in lieu of $1 million bail at the sheriff's West Hollywood station, said Deputy Jeff Gordon of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

An anonymous tip had led investigators to Correia, Gordon said. A warrant was served at his home Friday, and as the dwelling was searched he was arrested.

The stabbing was reported about 9:20 a.m Monday on the Red Line train, which stopped at the Vermont/Santa Monica Boulevard station.

Jose Edgaro Velazco-Alvarado, 31, was apparently accosted by Correia, who suddenly slashed his throat, according to broadcast reports. The train stayed at the station as paramedics were called, and the station was closed for several hours.

The attack was captured by a video camera inside the train, but the video has not been released.

Velazco-Alvarado was taken to a hospital, where he later died, said coroner's Chief Craig Harvey.
