Three teenage girls were injured, one critically, when they were struck by a Toyota Prius in North Hollywood today.

The girls were struck around 1:35 p.m. at the Magnolia Boulevard offramp from the southbound Hollywood (170) Freeway, according to Los Angeles police Officer Rosario Herrera.

Herrera said the driver of the Prius had just exited the freeway, but lost control of the car, which hit two other vehicles before striking the girls, who were apparently on a sidewalk. The girls were believed to be students at a nearby school, possibly Oakwood Secondary School.

Officer Leland Tang of the California Highway Patrol said that the 48- year-old driver was at the hospital and was also being interviewed. He said that the Prius has a black box and investigators would be able to download information about what happened to determine if the brakes failed.

"We're not going to hang this on his word," Tang said. "We'll take the car apart and look at everything."
