Woman Shot While Driving on Freeway in North Hollywood

The victim, who is in stable condition, is hit in the upper torso in a car that has a baby and two other adults inside, according to the LAPD.

Update 11:35 a.m. Saturday

A gunman who wounded a woman in a car-to-car shooting on the Hollywood (170) Freeway in North Hollywood was at large Saturday.

The shooting was reported at 7:10 p.m. Friday on the 170 Freeway north of Sherman Way, said Officer Cleon Joseph of the LAPD. There was no suspect information provided on the gunman, who was driving a white sedan, and a motive for the shooting was unknown.

"The woman was traveling on the freeway when a vehicle drove up next to her and opened fire," Joseph said. "She was struck in the upper torso. She pulled off the freeway and called for help."

ABC7 and KCAL9 reported that the woman was a passenger in the back seat. She was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, according to reports heard over the police scanner. She is in stable condition.

"A white, foreign-type vehicle pulled up alongside them and an individual from the rear of that vehicle opened fire on their family car, striking the vehicle numerous times," said LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman, according to ABC7.

The driver exited the southbound Hollywood Freeway at Sherman Way, entered the northbound portion, but because of a flat tire, pulled off to the right shoulder north of Sherman Way, where the victim was treated by paramedics, according to Joseph.

The child's car seat was grazed by a round, according to KCAL9, which reported that the woman's father, sister and boyfriend were also in the car and were uninjured. The group was heading out to celebrate the woman's birthday, the station reported.

Two right lanes on the southbound Hollywood Freeway were closed for about 30 minutes during the investigation, said Officer Tatiana Sauquillo of the California Highway Patrol.

As of 8:45 p.m., both lanes were reopened and the investigation was taking place off the freeway, the CHP reported on Twitter

“There’s no evidence the shooting was gang-related or a road-rage incident,” said Sgt. Marc LaMont of the LAPD’s North Hollywood Station, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Another shooting with similar circumstances occured on the 170 Freeway in North Hollywood on Aug. 24. A driver reported that his car was hit with three rounds in the northbound lanes near the Burbank Boulevard exit in what police described as a "completely random attack." The driver, who was not injured, described his attacker's car as a "four-door, silver American sedan'' and said the shots came from the back seat. It is not known if police believe there is a connection between the shootings.
