Young NoHo Boxer Died of Ruptured Spleen

Raul Alvarez Jr. was sparring at a gym in Burbank when he started to complain of pain.

A North Hollywood teen who died in July after sparring at a Burbank boxing gym suffered a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding, the Daily News reports.

Raul Alvarez Jr., 16, was taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center on July 27 around 6:45 p.m. and died about an hour later.

He was sparring at Pullman's Gym at 4320 W. Magnolia Blvd., said Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.

"He complained of pain from light sparring while boxing," Ryburn said. "While at the hospital, the male suddenly went unconscious. All efforts by medical personnel to revive the male were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later."

Alvarez Jr. was wearing protective gear while he sparred, according to the Daily News. The case is being investigated by the District Attorney's office, the publication reports.

Please believe me that the level of incompetence at some of these gyms is outrageous, especially from those 'Old' Pros! Sure, the 'Old' has beens that fancy themselves 'trainers of former champs'....LMAO For any parent to trust their child's well being in these hacks hands is asking for trouble. I am very saddened that this youngster lost his life. For some reason many of these kids who seem to be targeted are from our minority neighborhoods. For sure the sport has a huge history of Hispanic Champs and many of youngsters have dreams. It is when your dreams are taken advantage of that I personally find almost criminal. One suggestion is that any minor and perhaps young adults get a thorough medical exam. John J. Nazarian, P.I. desperatexes.com
