Congress Nixes Burbank Airport Curfew Bill

The bill would have prevented flights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

A proposal to impose a mandatory curfew at Bob Hope Airport, preventing overnight flights to the Burbank airfield, was narrowly defeated Tuesday in Congress.

The House of Representatives voted 208-212 on the proposal by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank. But Schiff said that while he was disappointed, he was encouraged that support for the idea has grown. The House defeated the issue in 2011, that time on a vote of 178-243.

"I'm encouraged that bipartisan support for a curfew at the Bob Hope Airport has only grown, and hope that the FAA gets the message that we are serious about noise relief," Schiff said.

The airport has an informal, voluntary curfew with commercial airlines that generally prevents flights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. That voluntary system, however, does not apply to cargo flights or private planes.

The proposal that was defeated Tuesday would have formalized the overnight curfew and applied to all flight operations. It would have only applied to Bob Hope Airport.
