Council Blocks Strip Clubs, Adult Businesses on 3 Valley Streets

If approved, the ordinance would become effective immediately and stay in place for 45 days, but could be extended for two years while the city planners develop permanent regulations.

A Los Angeles City Council committee took action today to temporarily prevent strip clubs and other adult businesses from setting up shop along three San Fernando Valley roads where prostitution has been a problem.

The Planning and Land Use Management Committee agreed, without discussion, to have the City Attorney's Office draft an "interim control ordinance" that would prevent permits from being issued to strip clubs, topless bars, massage parlors, dancehalls, liquor stores and other adult businesses.

  • Lankershim Boulevard, between Roscoe Boulevard/Tuxford Street and San Fernando Road in Sun Valley
  • San Fernando Road, between Sunland Boulevard and Branford Street in Sun Valley
  • Sepulveda Boulevard, from Oxnard Street to Rayen Street, in Van Nuys

The proposal from Councilwoman Nury Martinez needs approval from the full City Council.

Police recently started cracking down on prostitution and related crime along certain Sun Valley and Van Nuys streets, some of which neighborhoods but also include commercial and industrial areas.

Mike O'Gara, president of the Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council, spoke in support of  Martinez's plan, saying the ordinance was "very necessary" due to the "huge rate of prostitution going up and down Lankershim Boulevard."
