Did You Know It Is 'L.A. River Day?' Now You Do
The proclamation follows the announcement that the United States Army Corps of Engineers has selected a $1 billion plan to revitalize 11 miles of the L.A. River.
The Los Angeles City Council proclaimed today as L.A. River Day to raise awareness about the urban waterway.
The proclamation follows the announcement that the United States Army Corps of Engineers has selected a $1 billion plan to revitalize 11 miles of the L.A. River, from Griffith Park to downtown Los Angeles.
City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell said the federal funding will have a ripple effect in improving neighborhoods along the river.

"It will also positively impact our local economy, bringing with it jobs, tourism and a healthier environment for everyone," O'Farrell said during a special presentation at City Hall.
He said a revitalized river may even see the return of the endangered steelhead trout.

Congressman Xavier Becerra, D-Los Angeles, thanked those who supported the project over the years.
"L.A. will revitalize one of its great arteries and make it a riverway we will be proud of," Becerra said.
