New Law Requires Drivers to Give Cyclists a 3-Foot Cushion

The Three Feet for Safety Act goes into effect next September.

A new law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown into law Monday will require motorists to give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing or driving behind them, KTLA reports.

The Three Feet for Safety Act solidifies prior language that simply stated that drivers "keep a safe distance."

However, if there isn't enough room to maintain a three-foot distance, drivers must “slow to a speed that is reasonable and prudent."

Given that NoHo was recently named one of the best-car free neighborhoods in Los Angeles and the ongoing push for bike lanes on Lankershim Boulevard, do you think this law would have a positive impact locally?

The law is slated to take effect on Sept. 14, 2014. Violators can be fined up to $154.
