New Stoplight Activated at Lankershim and Valerio
The local neighborhood council pushed for a traffic signal at the intersection.
A small, but frequented intersection along Lankershim Boulevard got a new stoplight on Tuesday to help boost pedestrian safety.
The traffic signal at Lankershim's crossing with Valerio Street will significantly benefit the shoppers who cross the street to check out the North Hollywood Swap, nearby residents and students, said Ernie Moscoso, president of the North Hollywood Northeast Neighborhood Council.
He says there's been plenty of close calls at that intersection, even with previously installed pedestrian signs and blinking lights to warn drivers.
"We were concerned that somebody had to die before something happens, so we talked about it and I think the city heard us," Moscoso said. "This is a very traveled crosswalk."
Three months and nearly a quarter million of Proposition C and federal money later, LA City Councilman Paul Krekorian flipped the switch to activate the stoplight.
"Usually, it's the people who live in the neighborhood and community members that best understand what the risks are, where the dangerous areas are, we work closely with the community so we can provide the right solution," Krekorian said.
