Tiara Street Park Opening Next Month

A long-delayed park at the corner of Lankershim Boulevard and Califa Street will open by the end of the September following the installation of a new automatic gate system.

Ground broke on Tiara Street Park several years ago, back before city council boundaries were redrawn and when Tom Labonge represented North Hollywood, but a new program to retrofit park gates to lock on a timer slowed progress.

Though locked from the outside, the new system allows people still inside the park to leave through the gate, said Charles Singer, superintendent of recreation operations.

Tiara Street Park abuts an elementary school and is right across the street from a heavily-frequented In N' Out Burger.

"We expect lots of folks to eat their lunch there and children will eventually gather in that area," Singer said.

In addition to playground equipment, the park includes a multi-purpose room to house youth or senior programs that have yet to be organized, he said.

"We're going to offer programming; natural seletion will be able to settle on something that will stick," Singer said.

He added the multi-purpose room could be rented out.
