Villaraigosa's 'Awkward' 'Oops Moment' at the DNC [Video]

Los Angeles mayor's confusing handling of a vote on the Democrats' party platform, captured on video, draws attention to scripted outcome.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was caught in what the LAist website called an "oops" moment at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night.

The mayor, who served as chairman of the DNC, called for three votes on whether to invoke God in the party platform and reaffirm the role of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. It was not his finest hour in front of the camera, according to some observers.

Villaraigosa's handling of the vote was called "awkward" by the Los Angeles Times. Jon Stewart, host of the The Daily Show on Comedy Central, had fun pointing out that Villaraigosa's awkwardness might have been due to the fact that an affirmative vote had been scripted on his teleprompter. Villaraigosa approved the vote, saying that two-thirds of the delegates had voted in the affirmative, although many objected.

So many good comments. Right on! I finallly had it with the extreme wings of both parties and am now a "decline to state" or independent. Neither party will take me for granted anymore. Definitely, the way Villar handled the embarrassing situation was exactly the way he and the rocket scientists on the LA City Council run the once great city of Los Angeles. One good thing -- I would say with certainty that Villar is finished as far as the national democratic party is concerned. That's a good thing! Finally, I find it frightening that a lot of the Democrats at the convention voted against God and the Jews. The whole thing was a debacle.
Tim Ryder September 8, 2012 at 03:21 pm
But we all have to admit that Villaraigosa's display of awkwardness and Clint Eastwood's display of insanity were the only worthy highlights of the two week convention parties

The DNC must have regretted having him there..many of us regretted it from the beginning..What were they thinking? He is a corrupt, evil POLITICIAN..that thought being Mayor of L.A. was just some stepping stone to the Presidential Throne.. Now the rest of the country knows what we know..He is a little 'dictator'.. He manipulated that vote just as he manipulated the Hollywood Community Plan to pass, his vision of 'elegant density, while we live here in gridlock every day ... paying off his Developer Debts with it..selling Hollywood off to them for his Mayoral Campaigns..
The best part was watching him with his phony, pasted on smile the morning after on the news shows, that challenged him about how he handled that vote..He lied/misrepresented the event....just as he has pasted on that same phony smile here and lied and misrepresented so many things here..Especially The Hollywood Community Plan.. Now the rest of the country, AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, know what we have had the misfortune of knowing for years.THIS is NOT a LEADER..This is just an egotistical OPPORTUNIST.. Hopefully it is finally over for him now..and he will just disappear to his bevy of girlfriends and his retirement home, where he will never have to live anywhere near all that he has inflicted on Hollywood..and L.A....his 'legacy'..a higher density, clogged up Hollywood while he basks in his quite retirement home where no skyscrapers are allowed and there so gridlock at all.
Duff Strong September 8, 2012 at 04:07 pm
Why do you find it frightening that people don't believe in the JudeoChristian God?
John Pittaway September 8, 2012 at 06:00 pm
The awkward moment was not Villar's. It was Obama's. He is out of step with blue collar Cbhristian s that make up the voting core his party. Jews don't vote on Israel, Christians do.
Duff Strong September 8, 2012 at 06:04 pm
It's amazing how many people give the guy a pass. I guess it's less embarrassing than admitting you backed the wrong guy.
Nelson R Grande II September 8, 2012 at 06:28 pm
The most disappointing aspect of this whole thing is that the result was already prescripted. It is a very bad mark on how the DNC handles Democracy.
Stephan Early September 8, 2012 at 06:44 pm
As for the mayor being pushed in to the situation, nonsense. As an attorney and a life long politician he should have had at least a rudimentary understanding of Roberts Rules which he completely ignored in his rush to deny due process and democratic procedure. It was a low point for the Republic.
BILLWOLFE September 8, 2012 at 10:03 pm
THOSE WHO VOTED NO TO THE AMMENDMENT WERE TYPICAL LEFT WINE SECLURISTS AND ARAB AND PALISTANIAN SUPPORTERS. OBAMA KNEW THAT THAT WORD GOD AND THE ISSUE OF PALISTINE HAD TO BE RE-INCERTED BACK INTO THE PLATFORM. ALSO, THE LOVE AFFAIR BETWEEN BILL CLINTON AND OBAMA IS TO TRY TO INSURE AN OBAMA VICTORY SO THE WAY WILL BE OPEN FOR EITHER HILLERY OR MAYBE HIMSELF TO TRY TO SECURE THE NOMINATION IN 2016. IF ROMNEY WINS ,THEY WILL HAVE NO CHANCE.
Elke Heitmeyer September 8, 2012 at 10:40 pm
The amendment needed a 2/3 vote in the affirmative. This was clearly at least 50/50. The should have revoted by counting the people. Aye, go left, Nay go right, count the heads. On another note - what happened to the separation of Church and State? Mr. Strickland said, speaking as a minister the Dem platform needs to express the faith and belief in God. Seems very wrong to me. Faith and beliefs are personal elements, not political. In addition, it seems very imperialistically arrogant to tell a sovereign country where they should have their capital.
OmarA. G September 8, 2012 at 11:42 pm
Julian Castro, made Mr. Villar look silly. Julian has a bright future can wait to see what's next for him, he was inspirational with his speech not embarrassing like Antonio.
Either way F the GOP racist. Obama & Biden 2012!!!
Fight September 8, 2012 at 11:58 pm
You tell 'em, champ! Mayor V. should have let the platform stand as it was because afterall, we Democrats stand in unity against Israel and the majority of us all find the mere mention of God simply offensive.
Fight September 9, 2012 at 12:03 am
I've got news for you, there is nothing that can save the current Democratic party from embarrassment. The leaders of the party obviously learned nothing from the blowout losses of the 2010 elections and if anything, moved there platform even FURTHER left. Every political analyst knows that the country as a whole is center right. The utter arrogance of the Democratic party in it's disregard for the will of people from jamming the unread health care law through to Mayor V. at the convention will be a stark reminder once they lose all power in government this November..as they should!
robert September 9, 2012 at 02:34 am
"F the GOP racist." Lol. so how about that civility? And how many times are people going to play the race card? you would think that there could be only so many in a deck.
J.L. Capps September 9, 2012 at 01:47 pm
I think the dems should stick to their beliefs! If they believe there is no God, which is why it was written up by the committee headed by Debbie needstowashherhair-Shultz and the rest of the Supreme Beings Known only as LIBERAL, and then passed, after which it was looked over by Barack "no jobs" Obama and ok'd... So when put up for a vote on the floor, they should know how they're die hard supporters feel, bcuz they feel the same way. So unless your blind u can see this as a ploy by "no jobs" to try and trick religious folks n2 voting for him, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT PLAN LOL
Fool us once shame on you, fool us twice.... Well u know how it goes.

The MOG is right. If sleaze ball Tony had a modicum of honor, he'd drop the Raigosa from his dual name and insert "baboso." Tony Villababoso -- Village Idiot
Scott Zwartz September 9, 2012 at 01:54 pm
Tony Villababoso found himself in an awkward spot because he is devoid of all integrity. An honest man would have admitted that it did not carry by 2/3 votes.
Scott Zwartz September 9, 2012 at 01:55 pm
What fool linked God and Jerusalem as Israel's capital?
God is a psychotic fictional character invented by seriously mentally ill people, whereas one can travel to Jerusalem and see that it is in fact the capital of Israel.
J.L. Capps September 9, 2012 at 02:00 pm
Btw for all of peeps on here claiming "seperation of church and state" that was written in by our fore fathers to protect OUR RIGHTS, not the rights of the government & most defenitley not for the rights of the church. WE THE PEOPLE, are protected under law, and states as such that no religion will take precedence over another. Up until this point in history, our descendants had shown MUCH preference to Christianity. Thomas Pain, the father of all fore fathers wrote fully about the strangle hold the government and the church had upon society. He thought it to be a travesty.
So again, don't kid yourself and believe we cannot mention our creator, we were created, no arguing that. Seperation of church from state does not and will never amount to a subtraction of religion from human life, it is to protect individual belief, if you don't believe in God, more power to you, but again my beliefs ARE PROTECTED. By the seperation of church from state.

FAITH = Sin
FAITH requires that people accept as true something that has no basis in reality. People who act on the basis of FAITH cause wars because God told them and in the USA, we have fools across the nation that fervently belief that GOD wants their high school football team to win. FAITH also leads to irresponsibility -- people filled with FAITH gleefully kill others because God told them. People, who do not believe in God, know that they are responsible for their behavior and the "Buck stops with Them." Thus, they have to take responsibility for their own actions, and they have to take care of not only themselves, but also help fellow human beings to improve the world.
J.L. Capps September 9, 2012 at 02:05 pm
Hey Scott,
"God is a psychotic fictional character invented by seriously mentally ill people" You do realize u are a descendent of those people, the same people who gave birth to civilization thousands of years ago. Mentally ill, I would believe is someone who has NOT ONE ANSWER, only theory's to fall back on, claiming others are ignorant. That's just me tho. You do your thing genius.
J.L. Capps September 9, 2012 at 02:19 pm
Scotty,
Also I would like to pray for you, a man with no faith is like a faucet with no water, there's no reason for existence. But I do believe you have faith, you do believe there is NO god, that's faith, you have no proof but it's what YOU believe.
nonoise September 9, 2012 at 03:09 pm
J.L., I guess you think just like the church members of Divine Saviour Catholic church, that the church bell is God. Is God a bell for you too? Those idiots should stick the bell in between their two ears since there is nothing in between them.
And, there is no proof with what you believe either, and no proof in the other million religions that claim to be true too. The Spanish from spain told the Indians their religion was wrong and converted them to the Catholic religion. Whose religion is the right one? I would vote for the bell but the Catholic church already has first choice on that option. So, the only choice left are people that do the right thing and live the right away, and that has nothing to do with relligion, they have a piece of God in them, not religion or religous people or people that worship bells.
J.L. Capps September 9, 2012 at 03:33 pm
No noise,
U guess wrong, I'm no Christian, nor catholic, nor agnostic... I'm a believer in wonder, I do not and will not claim to kno anything to be true or false... But I can recognize the battle between good & evil, right & wrong and so on today we worship actors and politicians and the like, who we find more and more to be compelled by faults inside every man, because they are no different than every man, and we find mayb they are not the best role models for our kids... back then they believed in gods who were compelled by decisions made by men, fictious or not the IDEA behind these gods were "real" and we're used as a moral compass to actively pursue good and to stray from evil Which belief is better?... THAT IS NO ONE MANS DESICION TO MAKE Belief is n the eye of the beholder, I ask you not to believe like me, just asking those who don't think as I, to not try and force upon me beliefs I find just as irrelevant as the ideas I have that u oppose... Again a MAN who believes he knows it all, for a fact knows absolutely nothing
nonoise September 9, 2012 at 04:36 pm
J.L., very well put. I agree with most or maybe all of what you said.
Divine Saviour Catholic Church should not force their amplified sound system into my home 6 times a day every day starting at 7:55AM. That is their way of brainwashing. It is their way of forcing their religion down your throat whether you like it or not. I am not too clear on what your last 2 sentences mean.
J.L. Capps September 9, 2012 at 05:35 pm
No, they r voicing they're beliefs, the sound of the bell is a vibration, no more to u, it cannot and rightly so should not influence you n n e way... The negative feelings u r experiencing are not a result of the bell ringing only a result of the emotions U allow them to evoke. Live n let live, a learn from what we DON'T understand... To silence the voices of those we oppose... Is to silence the voice of reason entirely
nonoise September 10, 2012 at 03:31 pm
J.L., the bells are not a voice. They are not a person or a church or a god. The amplified sound is noise, just like any kind of unwanted sound. Google the definition. I am not silencing anyone. Anyone can put the sound inside their home. People are not allowed to protest or spread their message inside someone's home.
nonoise September 10, 2012 at 03:32 pm
That is in someone else's home or a stranger's home that does not want to hear their message. What happened to the separation of church and state? And, forced religion? Just Dem's really don't believe in that. It is all a shame.
nonoise September 10, 2012 at 03:35 pm
It's all a lie, Dem's say they believe in separation of church of state. They really believe in forced religion.

The state railway, Deutsche Bahn, operates http://www.outletcoachstoday.com what it calls - using the English that http://www.coachoutletod.com infuriates language purists - a Call a Bike scheme. http://www.coachs-outletcar.com There is a bank of red bikes outside the station. On the bike, http://www.coachoutletdp.com there's a telephone number which you call, and http://www.coachoutletwo.com the voice at the other end gives you a code to http://www.coachfactoryoutletsp.com unlock the bike. When you've finished, you lock it http://www.coachfactoryoutletli.net to something fixed and call the number with a code and somebody picks it up. http://www.coachfactoryoutletce.org You will be charged eight cents a minute. But most of us have our own bikes. We http://www.coachoutletonlinelc.net do not wear helmets. It is foolish, but we don't. I always mean to - but I http://www.coachoutletonlinesc.com don't. I realise that the brain is man's second favourite organ - but I still http://www.coachoutletonlinelsa.com leave my helmet behind. There is an argument now that if cities insist on http://www.louisvuittonoutletct.com helmets for bike-hire schemes, then people simply don't ride bikes. And if http://www.louisvuittonoutletti.org people don't ride bikes, then they're less fit and that means that more of them http://www.coachoutletrf.com die of heart-attacks.On this argument, insisting on helmets raises the overall death.

Dear tbs, Deon Coles black box is the worst tv show ever. Though it is hosted by a black man, it'sRead More a show based on pointing fun and rude Racist jokes directed toward black people. If there was a white host it would be considered racist but because a black man was appointed to be host , you might have figured we wouldn't be offended but we are and I can't speak for all but I feel like resist jokes aren't ok regardless of who is telling them and I would like tbs to take down this show or atleast change the points in the show ! -signed, Kalil Stimpson

First of all, Bill, a funniest new comic in LA NOT being gay would be news. In addition, being aRead More comedian myself, I can tell you most gay comedians are not as bigoted as you suggest.
