Colton Patarias and his classmates garnered $3,500.

A 9-year-old student at Wesley School in North Hollywood was featured this week in a Daily News a series on people who make a positive impact on their community.

For the past three years, Colton Patarias, his father and his elementary school teacher have raised $3,500 for the Los Angeles Zoo's wildlife conservation program to protect endangered animals, the Daily News reports.

The money helped Colton and his classmates adopt an animal at the zoo. In return, the kids take zoo field trips to learn about species and nature in general.
