Campbell Hall's Ehrlich Drafted in 6th Round by Cardinals

Local sports: Adam Ehrlich must decide between signing a Major League contract or honoring his letter-of-intent to Loyola Marymount.

Adam Ehrlich, a top baseball player for Campbell Hall High, was picked in the sixth round Monday by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League draft.

Now, the power-hitting catcher has a big decision to make on whether to sign a professional contract or play Division I college baseball at Loyola Marymount (and then become eligible for the draft again in three years).

Ehrlich is weighing his options, and a decision is expected soon. In the meantime, he has dropped out of the fifth annual City vs. Southern Section All-Star Game on Saturday at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.

Based on past seasons, Ehrlich’s slot value figures to be around $200,000 as a signing bonus, though there are a lot of variables. If he does sign, major league teams cover college tuition if it does not work out. On the other hand, Ehrlich’s stock could increase after three college seasons – or decrease – so there is a lot to consider.

“Being drafted so high, it’s great news,” Campbell Hall coach Juan Velazquez said. “Adam has worked very hard, and he is very deserving. He’s weighing his options, and I know that playing pro baseball has always been a dream of his, so I would not be surprised. Whatever decision he makes is going to be a positive one.”

Ehrlich, who hits left-handed, is coming off a productive senior season that included a .566 batting average, five home runs and a San Fernando Valley-best 49 RBIs. He is the third Campbell Hall alum to be drafted by a major league team. In 2008, Greg Zebrack was drafted in the 43 round by the Dodgers, then went to USC before transferring to Penn. In 2007, Daniel Magnante was drafted in the 4oth round by Oakland, and he decided instead to attend Syracuse, which does not have a baseball program.

NOHO SHORTSTOP EARNS ALL-CITY HONORS

Jonathan Linares, a shortstop for North Hollywood, has been named second-team All-City Section after helping the Huskies to the City Division II baseball final Saturday at Dodger Stadium, where they lost 2-0 to Wilson of L.A.

Linares, a senior, batted .488 with 24 RBIs – the third consecutive season in which he has batted .400 or better. As a pitcher, he had two saves in the playoffs, and he made a couple of terrific plays at shortstop.

“It’s well-deserved. Jonathan put in a lot of hard work these past four years, and he is definitely one of the better players in the league,” coach Hector Menchaca said. “He was a key component in us reaching the final. He’s not flashy, but he gets the job done.”
