It could cost Americans 20 percent more to get their bacon fixes as a deadline virus sweeps through the nation's hog barns. (Patch file photo)

"The pork industry has committed $ 1.7 million to research how the virus....spread so quicklyRead More after it was reported in the nation's top pork-producing states..." Gimme a hundred bucks, i'll tell ya how. >>> IT'S BECAUSE YOU PUT THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF PIGS TOGETHER IN SMALLISH SPACES VERY CLOSE TOGETHER AND ''LIVING'' IN UNBELIEVABLY FILTHY CONDITIONS !!! <<< Oh, DAMN, i shoulda waited for someone to offer me that hundred....

I feel bad for the good people that will loose their jobs. The people who should loose their job isRead More the leaders of the company that have made decisions that have caused SCE rates to be one of the highest in the country. Not long ago SCE had one of the lowest rates. There is so much waste on new SCE programs that cost millions of dollars that do nothing except help with someone's presentation.
Allan April 16, 2014 at 06:14 am
Let's see now. LA City starts new trash program which will kill some small business and certainlyRead More result in layoffs. Now SCE going to be laying off 900 plus. Now looking too good there, SoCal.
OldTimer April 16, 2014 at 08:34 am
Well, this is what they call 'progress', folks. Think about it. Not long ago they installed theRead More 'smart meters', right? Well, with 'smart meters' you don't need meter readers, do you? So this has nothing at all to do with democrats or republicans. Let's stop going there. It's about cutting costs with technology. Remember when garbage trucks were 2 man units? I do. Those were back the days when the men manually hoisted the cans and dumped the garbage in the trucks. Well, now the trashing dumping is automated and only a driver is needed. Sorry, folks. That's called 'progress', like it or not. Those layed off garbage men and meter readers need to reinvent themselves and find other work in another industry. But let's not make this political. That's so absurd.

Still wondering where all this stuff is going to go(especially since there has also been talk ofRead More building homes in the area), more so now that NBC has also moved their operations to Universal City. The traffic in the area is already way beyond congested. And Universal Studios(the park)celebrates their 50th anniversary THIS year, not next year as the article says. The park opened in 1964.

calchick82 April 10, 2014 at 09:57 AM "Still wondering where all this stuff is going toRead More go(especially since there has also been talk of building homes in the area), more so now that NBC has also moved their operations to Universal City." ____________________________________________________ Everything that was announced is replacing something. Minion Mayhem replaces the Terminator show. Springfield replaces the row of food outlets and souvenir shops that was headed by Doc Brown's Fried Chicken. The Fast and Furious takes the place of the old Avalanche attraction on the tram tour. Harry Potter replaces the Curious George playground and the Gibson amphitheater.

Of course they did; especially after the judgement against the company for the accelerator switches.
andy fischer April 10, 2014 at 09:22 am
When the heck is an all new Tacoma going to come out? It's been the same truck since 2005 or so.
Free cone day at Ben & Jerry's is Tuesday. Patch file photo.
Scott Toro April 8, 2014 at 04:51 pm
The CityWalk store is not participating in this promotion, according to the B & J website. ButRead More you can get still your free cone at the Sherman Oaks Galleria store.
Whether Dodger games will be seen on DirecTV this year is still up in the air. Patch file photo.
Laura April 4, 2014 at 11:03 am
I wouldn't be surprised if Time Warner was milking this to get more subscribers. I've had TimeRead More Warner, and I'd rather have no TV at all than deal with them again.
John April 4, 2014 at 12:24 pm
Dodgers , Giants, baseball. Who cares. Nothing but a bunch of drunken thug gang members in theRead More stands. I certainly don't need to pay for it when I don't watch it.
Ed W April 4, 2014 at 12:27 pm
I am a Dodger fan, but I don't want my basic DirecTV bill to go up for this channel. I realizeRead More that, but for the money paid by TWC, the Dodgers would not have the money to go out and purchase such a talented team. However, only those who want to pay for SportsNet should be charged. By the way, the quality of the picture on my TV significantly improved when I switched from TWC to DirecTV, so I won't go back for the Dodgers or anything else.

From my perspective, it's not how it's used, it is that the technology *exists* that's the story.Read More How else can it be used, and for what purposes?
Brian Hamilton March 28, 2014 at 11:07 am
HOW is it the App's fault? That's like blaming the telephone for the conversation.
just a parent March 28, 2014 at 12:03 pm
With Yik Yak there is no way to trace who made threats against people or property. On the otherRead More hand, most apps such as Patch require you to sign in with an email before selecting a moniker; thus, inappropriate posts can be traced. There is really no reason for students at a high school or middle school to have the ability to post anonymously without recourse on this or any other site. In fact, the app is meant for people over 17 years old; yet, there is no way to police the age of the anonymous users. Glad it is blocked around middle and high schools.

Nice story, Penny. I suspect, however, that you might have meant "flair" instead ofRead More "flare" (article title). :-)

I did. Sigh. Thanks!
Following months of "Fight for $15" protests calling on higher wages for fast-food workers, some California McDonald's employees have joined in six lawsuits filed in three states. Patch file photo.
ChristieD March 14, 2014 at 09:44 pm
@ MFriedrich; I would hope that Most McD franchisees would not be so immoral as to rob theirRead More employees like these ones did. I am sure that the majority of the Franchisees abhor the kind of publicity that this has generated. And besides, if they are ethical and follow the law, they have nothing to worry about. I understand your point about "oversteering" but the other side of the coin is that this behavior would continue and perhaps even spread if not dealt with, swiftly and surely. This was absolutely the best, and probably the only, action to make sure this illegal behavior did not continue. And now McD corporate will make sure that it does not continue. Those employers who currently offer OT hours and pay to their employees will continue to do so...they have done nothing wrong. They are most likely as irritated by these franchisees/managers actions and immoral behavior as we are. Like I said, no one wants this kind of publicity!
John March 17, 2014 at 04:07 pm
Pay these people what they have coming to them. They deserve the overtime pay and not the shaft. TheRead More prices may go up and maybe the top of the organization may have a pay cut, but don't take the money from the people that need it the most. I do not understand the greed of some people. So you have to pay an additional $.50 for your Big Mack. What kind of greedy (bad word) would be so stingy to keep these people from getting paid. Shame on all of you that are against this!
andy k. liberman March 17, 2014 at 04:09 pm
...we should get $.50 NOT to eat a "Big Mac"
Gas prices climbed past the $4 mark in Los Angeles County. Patch file photo.

maintenance, change to summer blend. Had a father-in-law in charge of a Gulf refinery in Santa FaRead More Sprngs. There were many refineries in the 70's and 80's. Now there are fewer refineries to process gas. A good way to keep cost of gas high. One refinery has a problem gas price goes up. So with the billions oil companys make, how about building more refineries to so when one goes down there are enough to keep up the supply. That will never happen, to much money to be made making a gas shortage.
Robert Lia March 13, 2014 at 12:00 pm
I don't know where you buy your gas, but prices have been over $4 a gallon for weeks.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) March 13, 2014 at 12:01 pm

What a crock...there are no new jobs..liberals need to stop with the propaganda..from ObamaRead More down...Democrat taxation anti business policies have driven CA businesses from the golden goose egg state....The only thing Democrats in CA are successful in creating are more govt dependent Democratic voters and allowing publiic unions to bankrupt our municipalities...
Maria Fotopoulos March 8, 2014 at 12:46 pm
According to the Economic Policy Institute, if "missing" workers were counted in theRead More official unemployment numbers, the national unemployment rate would be more like 10 percent, not the 6.7 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for February. bit.ly/1ntegfy

Let me tell you what it's like: I was laid off last May. I am 47 years old and I have never beenRead More fired, laid off or out of work since the age of 15. I am a College Graduate, I can't find a job and I am nit willing to take a pay cut nor will I lower myself to signing up for Obamacare. I don't know who's a bigger ass him or the ass I worked for.
A recent economic forecast says Los Angeles County is headed for 3-4 percent growth a year. Patch file photo.
Vito Spago February 25, 2014 at 12:45 pm
All of these leaders are responsible if the LA economy crashes and burns so of course they are goingRead More to say all is well. Guaranteed there will be higher interest rates and higher costs for everyone including businesses thanks to Obamacare premiums. That means less money to spend and less people to hire. If that is good news, you have to be nuts.

Why? That game was so one sided maybe it was a blessing for viewers. TWC = The Weather Channel.
Einie February 3, 2014 at 11:25 am
I agree. It had to be THE WORST Super Bowls in history! Even the commercials were disappointingRead More (except for 4...but even that's a poor %!)....And just for the record, FOX, the game was played in NEW JERSEY!!!!! They showed nothing but Time Square, Manhattan Island & the Statue of Liberty when they broke away!!! (of course, it's probably understandable, since the NFL didn't even give free seats to the Mayor of Rutherford, NJ - WHERE THE GAME WAS PLAYED!!!!!!)

Bandelier Pilferage January 24, 2014 at 08:21 pm
@ Chris Thom. NO-HO Macy's sells land. You speak from ignorance and a defunct base of illogical dataRead More that does not support your position, rather it exposes your animas and corrupt agenda. By your words you promote 'cultural genocide'.The present condition of this area is a blue-print for maximizing real-estate speculation and dumping your portfolio and switching from single family housing to business projects and multi-family housing to accommodate the illegal Mexican invasion at the expense of indigenous families that only desire to maintain their quality of life. I've viewed drastic change(demographics) in the area since 1962 to present. Its not a pretty sight. We have been invaded. The CITIZEN is in peril. It's obvious the FED GOV has an agenda and its to saturate SOCAL with as many illegal IMMIGRANTE's as can be tolerated. The newcomers have imported their customs and usages at the jeopardy of American sensibilities. Look at any areas were (INDIO's) have overwhelmed by staggeringly high number and unconscionable birth-rates encouraged by Roman Catholicism. My revulsion of hearing Spanish spoken in every nook and cranny, navigating through the myriad of gang-neighborhoods and jeopardizing life and limb exposing self to LA vehicle traffic is nauseating. The 'No Necks have supplanted Americana with a 'Variant Beaner Culture'. Loose your ostrich mentality, embrace what 'Big Brother' has loosed on you and then recall what is lost. Los Angeles is the first casualty of loss of political imperative to Reconquista. When you tax-payer's ponder what your hard earned $$$$ is being spent on, look no further than a 1.5 million illegals you help to support. Pilferage is the name.........PT of your sensibilities the game. I only word it......did not event it.
Christopher Thom January 24, 2014 at 11:44 pm
Wow... You can't be serious...Either you're joking around or you're just another paranoid racistRead More assuming every Hispanic is a gang member illegal alien living on federal aid and wrongly thinking English speaking Caucasians are native to North America and some how are in the position to decide the fate of all other cultures and races. .... No no no, you have to be joking; or just have a lot of misdirected anger.
Brian Aherne January 29, 2014 at 01:28 pm
Did anyone happen to notice: the more government tries to control things, the worse they seem to getRead More -always far worse than it was before there were any controls other than the most basic rules of society?

Stephanie January 26, 2014 at 12:57 pm
Armando is 100% right. The way to relieve congestion in that area is to make it more pedestrian andRead More bike friendly. No person in their right mind would move from that hub to a deserted, unsafe, rat-infested area.
Do not take a Lane out on Lankershim for bikes January 26, 2014 at 02:50 pm
Yes Armando but the comminty change VIneland and make it better.
