Man Convicted in Cold Case Studio City Murder from 1994

The gang member was found through DNA evidence.

May 15, 2012 A gang member linked through DNA to the 1994 cold-case murder of a Studio City man and the attempted murder of the man’s wife was convicted late Monday, the District Attorney’s Office announced. Deputy District Daniel Akemon of the Hardcore Gang Division said jurors deliberated for two days before convicting Kevin Bernard Smith Jr., 36, of the first-degree murder of Rupert “Rudy” Thompson, 73, with the special circumstance allegations that the murder was committed during the course of a burglary and robbery.  Jurors also convicted Smith of the willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder of Thompson’s wife, then 69, and found true an allegation of great bodily injury. 'Opportunistic Bandit' Wanted For Carjackings

The man is suspected in at least a dozen crimes in the Los Angeles area, including the Westside, the Valley and Hollywood areas.

Police released security video Tuesday of a man who they say committed carjackings and about a dozen strong-arm robberies and other crimes recently across Los Angeles, and in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Glendale and Pasadena. The suspect, dubbed the "Opportunistic Bandit," was described as black, about 25-35 years of age, 5-feet 9-inches to 6-feet 4-inches tall, weighing 180-250 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The man generally approaches his victims, mostly women, after they have obtained money at ATMs at banks or convenience stores, said Capt. The victim of the gunshot wound is hit one time and is expected to survive.

Two people opened fire on Tujunga Avenue in North Hollywood last night, missing their intended victim but striking a bystander, who was a family member of the intended victim, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.  The LAPD North Hollywood Division posted the following message on its Facebook page this morning: Wondering what the commotion was about last night? At approximately 8:00pm, a shooting occurred near Tujunga Ave and Miranda St. The Suspects exited their vehicle and began shooting at the intended Victim. Teacher at James Madison Middle School Being Investigated For 'Alleged Misconduct'

A teacher has been removed from his duties at James Madison Middle School in North Hollywood while a police investigation is conducted into "alleged misconduct," the Los Angeles Unified School District reported today. The man was removed from duty on Monday, said Monica Carazo of the LAUSD. His name was not released. Carazo said the principal of the school sent a letter to parents that read, in part: "The purpose of this letter is to inform you of an investigation involving alleged misconduct by a school employee who has been removed from campus pending the results of the investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. Family Of Woman Killed In Toluca Lake Hit-And-Run Speaks Out

Karen McCauley, 61, was struck and killed on the 4100 block of Cahuenga Boulevard.

The family of the woman who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Toluca Lake on Friday night spoke to CBS2 and KCAL9 about their pain and pleaded for the driver to turn themselves in. Karen McCauley, 61, was struck and killed on the 4100 block of Cahuenga Boulevard, near Lankershim Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, and was pushing a cart across the street when she was struck, Borihanh said. The interview revealed several personal details about McCauley, including that she was pushing the cart because she was out recycling to make ends meet. According to relatives, McCauley was almost completely deaf after contracting rheumatic fever as a child and had also recently become a widow.

Missing Despondent FBI Agent Sought in Hills, Have You Seen Him?

The man is being sought by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in the Verdugo Mountains.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department issued an alert Saturday night seeking a despondent and potentially suicidal missing FBI agent who was last seen in the Verdugo Mountains area. The Burbank Police Department and FBI are conducting a search, and he could be in the Toluca Lake, North Hollywood, Studio City or Sherman Oaks areas. He is also being sought by more than 40 LASD personnel from the Altadena, Montrose, Santa Clarita and Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Teams including reserve deputies and volunteer rescuers, Special Enforcement Bureau - Emergency Services Detail deputy paramedics, bloodhounds, and helicopter crew have been assisting in the search.  The 35-year-old white male is on foot and despondent, according to police. Woman Struck, Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Toluca Lake

A woman in her 50s was struck and killed tonight in Toluca Lake by a vehicle driven by a hit-and-run driver. The crash was reported at 8:55 p.m. in the 4100 block of Cahuenga Boulevard, near Lankershim Boulevard, said Officer Bruce Borihanh of the Los Angeles Police Department. The site of the crash is near Universal Studios, as well as the borders of Studio City and North Hollywood. "The female was found lying in the street," Borihanh said, adding that witnesses at the scene reported the collision. "The suspect vehicle is a four-door sedan with collision damage to the front end last seen traveling at a high rate of speed." Man Suffers Smoke Inhalation Putting Out Apartment Fire

The fire is reported at 9:57 p.m. at 5636 N. Denny Avenue.

A 43-year-old male tenant suffered smoke inhalation tonight trying to put out a fire in a two-story apartment building in North Hollywood. The fire was reported at 9:57 p.m. at 5636 N. Denny Avenue, near Burbank Boulevard, and was knocked down in 16 minutes, said Matt Spence of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Forty two firefighters responded and managed to contain the fire to a single second-story unit. Spence said. The injured man was taken to a hospital, with what Spence called minor injuries.

Former Sears Worker Charged With Secretly Taping Women and Girls

Alejandro Gamiz, 27, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Van Nuys.

A former maintenance worker at a North Hollywood Sears store was charged today with 60 misdemeanor counts for allegedly hiding video cameras in the store's dressing rooms and taping women and girls for at least three years. Alejandro Gamiz, 27, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Van Nuys, according to the City Attorney's Office. He was charged with 30 counts of peeping into a changing room with the intention of invading an individual's privacy and 30 counts of using a concealed video recording device inside a changing room. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine for each count. Gamiz was arrested in April and released on $20,000 bail.
